I sat on the floor, still in the lab coat, and watched as the others carried the newly healed wolves out. The building was filled with dead humans. No police had been called. Preston stood next to where I sat, watching over things.
âYou okay, Mac?â He winked at me. âYou did that fast. Like, I think that was a record. Youâre really starting to get a knack for it.â
I shook my head. âI donât feel done.â
Rainer strode over and knelt down. Everyone had managed to grab clothes off the humans. We wouldnât draw attention to ourselves by being naked outside. Other reasons, maybe we would. I still couldnât bring myself to care.
âAre you feeling like you need to fix us because some of us got injuries?â
I did want to do that, but no. I got to my feet. âBear with me for a little bit. Is it safe to walk around?â
Rainer nodded. âSure. Great job keeping her safe. Take the others outside. I want to sleep in motel rooms tonight, but put Jarret in the main bedroom in the RV so heâs with us. Gus with Cristian. And her mom on the big couch. Yes, theyâre benefiting from nepotism. I donât care.â
Preston patted Rainerâs arm. âIâll make sure everyone is good. Even the two we donât know. Especially since everyone here is talking about joining our so-called pack, and you are about to have to lead all of them.â
Rainer visibly paled. âWhat?â
âYep.â
I walked past them. Rainer said it was safe. Heâd catch up.
I sniffed the air. Iâd had this happen to me before. The first time Iâd made Rainer and Jarret take me to find the Loups who got away. It was like I had just followed the feeling. I was doing it again. Rainer rushed up, grabbing my hand.
âSo, this is a you-are-in-a-hurry thing.â
I was bone deep tired. âI have to keep going until Iâm done. Period. The longer I wait, the more Iâm going to need to crash. That wonât make this easier. Someone is still here. Maybe more than one person.â
âGot it.â He squeezed my fingers. âYou never cease to amaze me.â
âIâm basically a walking battery waiting to make everyone feel better. Iâm like the packâs power button. And right now, Iâm the only one.â I sighed. âSorry, woe is me.â
He shook his head. âNo one feels that way about you except you. The rest of us are in awe. Period. When we get home, Iâm going to just cook and cook for you. Good food in your stomach goes a long way. Youâve lost a lot of weight. Youâre gorgeous, but I need to feed you. Itâs like a primal need.â
I abruptly stopped. I pointed at the wall. âThere.â
He stared at me, tilting his head. âNothing is there.â
âSure there is. We just canât see it. But I can sense it.â I strode to the wall. âSomething is back there.â
He leaned back. âReally? They have a hidden door? Like out of a movie. All right. What do we do?â
I closed my eyes and reached out.
