* * *

I sat on the floor, still in the lab coat, and watched as the others carried the newly healed wolves out. The building was filled with dead humans. No police had been called. Preston stood next to where I sat, watching over things.

“You okay, Mac?” He winked at me. “You did that fast. Like, I think that was a record. You’re really starting to get a knack for it.”

I shook my head. “I don’t feel done.”

Rainer strode over and knelt down. Everyone had managed to grab clothes off the humans. We wouldn’t draw attention to ourselves by being naked outside. Other reasons, maybe we would. I still couldn’t bring myself to care.

“Are you feeling like you need to fix us because some of us got injuries?”

I did want to do that, but no. I got to my feet. “Bear with me for a little bit. Is it safe to walk around?”

Rainer nodded. “Sure. Great job keeping her safe. Take the others outside. I want to sleep in motel rooms tonight, but put Jarret in the main bedroom in the RV so he’s with us. Gus with Cristian. And her mom on the big couch. Yes, they’re benefiting from nepotism. I don’t care.”

Preston patted Rainer’s arm. “I’ll make sure everyone is good. Even the two we don’t know. Especially since everyone here is talking about joining our so-called pack, and you are about to have to lead all of them.”

Rainer visibly paled. “What?”

“Yep.”

I walked past them. Rainer said it was safe. He’d catch up.

I sniffed the air. I’d had this happen to me before. The first time I’d made Rainer and Jarret take me to find the Loups who got away. It was like I had just followed the feeling. I was doing it again. Rainer rushed up, grabbing my hand.

“So, this is a you-are-in-a-hurry thing.”

I was bone deep tired. “I have to keep going until I’m done. Period. The longer I wait, the more I’m going to need to crash. That won’t make this easier. Someone is still here. Maybe more than one person.”

“Got it.” He squeezed my fingers. “You never cease to amaze me.”

“I’m basically a walking battery waiting to make everyone feel better. I’m like the pack’s power button. And right now, I’m the only one.” I sighed. “Sorry, woe is me.”

He shook his head. “No one feels that way about you except you. The rest of us are in awe. Period. When we get home, I’m going to just cook and cook for you. Good food in your stomach goes a long way. You’ve lost a lot of weight. You’re gorgeous, but I need to feed you. It’s like a primal need.”

I abruptly stopped. I pointed at the wall. “There.”

He stared at me, tilting his head. “Nothing is there.”

“Sure there is. We just can’t see it. But I can sense it.” I strode to the wall. “Something is back there.”

He leaned back. “Really? They have a hidden door? Like out of a movie. All right. What do we do?”

I closed my eyes and reached out.
